R.I.P. Google Reader

This is a post about something boring. But it is something boring like paperclips are boring. Boring old paperclips...I can't think of anything more meh. On the other hand, what if someone announced that all paperclips would suddenly be gone come July 1st? How would you feel then? What would you do?

Fuck. I just remembered about staples.

Ok, so maybe paperclips are not a good example. (Because you could also always do that 7th grade thing where you turn down the corner and spit on it a little? Tear a notch and then turn it back to hand in your homework. Someone should probably just take paperclips away. They're almost useless, really.)

No, what I'm talking about is Google Reader. I have been using Google Reader pretty much since I started reading blogs 8 years ago. I have it bookmarked on all my computers; I have the app on my phone. I read it in line, on the bus...this is all sounding very Sam I Am, but it's true--I read it everywhere.

Which is why I almost started to cry when I saw the announcement last week that Google Reader is closing, that on July 1 it will be gone. Gone??! And here I thought everything www lasts forevereverever. I feel betrayed, lost. And yes, a little silly with this boring post about a blog aggregator, but here we are. Staring at a soon-to-be obsolete not-paperclip.

So I must ask: if you read blogs (honestly I have about 200 in my Google Reader), what do you use? What do you recommend? An aggregator that works on a laptop as well as on a phone, has an app, all that yummy stuff. Pretty please: help.

It just hit me. Another sad side-effect of the disappearance of Google Reader is the years of images I have saved to my favorites. I guess this means I will have to start posting them, air out the dank corners of my starred items. Here we go...
Christmas on this, the first day of Spring.

I totally know what you mean. I did a WTF? face when I read that pop-up window about Reader going away. What happens to all the posts that I've starred to go back to, recipes and funny stories and craft projects that will never look the way they are supposed to?
My husband suggested Bloglines and I signed up, but it is so not the same. But after some finagling, it might be close. The jury is still out, but they are in negotiations.

I too am devastated by this boring news. I can't even find reader anymore at the top of my gmail. I feel like an old person whose exasperated kids have hidden my car keys.

I switched to Feedly over the weekend. It's good but oh so slick. Reader was a comforting reminder of the olden-days of blogging: stripped-down, utilitarian. The times, they are a changin'.

Funny, I just took a break from writing my very own boring post on the same subject. I signed up for both Feedly and Bloglovin'. So far I'm using the latter, though I vehemently oppose the dropped g.

I'm starting out by using Bloglovin. I like that I can read within the actual blog, but as I went to click 'post a comment' the damn thing didn't work, and I had to open your blog in a new tab to do that. So yeah. Not so sure about this.

I've heard a lot of people just read within Blogger's platform, the Dashboard or whatever. I don't like this. I don't like this Sam I Am.

I switched over to bloglovin' too, but they really do make it a pain to leave comments. I'm going to email them about that, actually....

I am so old and creaky and out of it that I never even used Reader. I just bookmarked everything and went there when I remembered.
But now I am going to aggregate and read and be all up and on top of it.

I am similarly freaking out. Someone mentioned Flipboard, but I haven't investigated it yet. How am I going to know how woefully far behind I am in reading the blogs I love without those little unread post numbers beside their names (87)? : /

After much flip-flopping all over the place, I think I'm settling on Bloglovin.' Though I'm just moving in with him--no ring yet.
