Zoey Gets Political

The other day I opened my fridge only to have a full gallon of milk fall on my foot. Fuck! I said, and bent down to mop up the milk that glu-glugged out. Insert something about "crying over spilt milk" here, but of course I first uprighted the carton because everyone knows you cannot clean up a mess that just keeps spilling. Or gushing, whatever. I don't know much about oil spills, Corexit, or Kevin Costner's brother Dan, though I assume he's a great guy. Hell, I don't even know much about milk except maybe something something Louis Pasteur. What I do know is that stupid plastic gallon of milk was made from crude oil.

Where to start, what to do, why, when all I want is to take a nap. I hate this, this oil spill, this corporate greed, this paper or plastic carbon-sized 13 shoe'd world when I keep forgetting to bring my reusable bags to the store. I hate the very fact that I drive to the store. It all feels so hopeless, you know? Sometimes it feels like the only truly impactful thing I can do is to teach Zoey what it all means. That, and yes, from now on we're buying the smaller cardboard cartons of milk (even if they are still coated with polyethylene...).

Happy Thursday. Not to get all didactic on you, but let's all try not to use any plastic today, mkay?
xo,
S

Gotta say - I know nothin' about the oil spill, living in a small-ish town in England. All I know is that it's near the Louisiana coast?

I think it's great that you're teaching your (hilarious and cute-as-a-button) daughter about it. I try and drill that information into all my nieces and nephews, hoping it sticks.

:)

"forgetting to bring my reusable bags" I never ever remember mine.

hers is the cutest aminal going.

and I am such a snob about my cloth bags. I catch myself looking down my nose at folks walking out with plastic. so don't feel bad for forgetting yours. I'm single-handedly saving the world and feelin' pretty darn smug about it...

I think it's awesome that you are teaching Zoey about the importance of cleaning after each other, caring about the fishes and the environment. She is the future generation and hopefully we manage to keep this planet in good shape for when she is our age...
I sometimes feels I don't do enough either, but it all starts with awareness and takes off from there...

*sigh*

My burrito I bought in bulk from the farmers market is wrapped in plastic. Dammit all.

Zoey is so darn cute. Good for you to teach her about corporate greed and the ramifications for us and wildlife alike. It's just so disheartening to see how much oil spills out on a daily basis and how much
damage all this has caused and will continue to cause.
Zoey for Greenpeace!!

OH SUSANNAH...
Don't get me started...I have major opinion with all of this...the oil spill...the corporate greed and all the bullshit.
I, too, feel like I do not do enough. I am a big recycler...as are my children, I compost, I do have cloth bags (but often leave them in the car, but recycle the ones I get)...and it never feels like enough.
All we hear are negatives...children...pesticides and ADD, vaccinations and links to Autism, environmental toxins being uncontrollably high, lead contents on toys exceeding the normal level, little girls "starting" at age 6,7,8...potentially b/c of antibiotics and growth hormones in our food, all of it makes me sick...frustrated...mad! It does seem like at times that no matter how much we do, we are still overwhelmed with toxins. In our oceans, in our food & sprayed on our vegetables, in our lotions, soaps, makeup and hell even inside of our milk cartons...who knew! Right now, it makes me want to lie outside in the grass drinking milk straight from my cow just to avoid these issues...ya know I live in Kentucky and we all have cows out in our yards - LOL - I sure do hope that utter is BPA free! I understand girl, I understand!

i don't drive, and it still amazes me to this day when i say that people look at me like i have three heads.

seriously people, i'm a singleton living within walking distance of a subway which gets me to wherever i want to go (in my daily life) within one hour or so.

why should i get a car?!?!?!?!?!

and for those of you who drive 15 minutes to work when there are public transportation options, grrrr

S- I am so happy you posted on this subject. I live on the Gulf coast of Alabama- we have dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, sea birds, sharks, and alligators, all within 100 yards of my home, at any given time, and I fear that it will all be gone in a matter of weeks. Bringing environmental awareness to our children is essential.

Awww she is really growing up to be a such a smart shark, lol.Well I can honestly say having been through Katrina and now this oil spill that I am ready to move away from Louisiana.I know it sounds like im running away, but its exhausting when u just keep taking hits like this.Im pretty disgusted by the whole mess and feel super helpless so I dont have much to say except its just overwhelming and the people down here cant take much more...Sorry to be so depressing but how can I be anything but, theres not anything happy or cheerful to say.K

Your statement about our own accountability in our day to day choices is more powerful than the bagillion comments on "corporate greed" and throwing the blame on something bigger.
I mean, definitely that something bigger (i.e. certain monster corps)hold a shitload of blame and need to be held accountable for their fuck ups, but, seriously... it starts at home, sisters. Walk and bike more, drive less and consume less crap.
Also- give hugs more.

ugh! I try to use/buy as little plastic as possible. it's just so difficult when it's literally everywhere in some shape or form - like you said, in even cardboard milk cartons. :(
